What is a Discipleship Training School?

A Discipleship Training School (DTS) is a foundational six-month program offered by Youth With A Mission (YWAM) to teach Christians how to know God and make Him known. It includes a three-month lecture phase for classroom learning and personal growth, followed by a three-month cross-cultural outreach phase to apply what was learned. The goal is to develop a deeper relationship with God and equip individuals for missionary work and a life of service

Most often, the training comes in two parts: lecture phase and outreach phase. 

Lecture Phase

  • This first phase involves intensive classroom teaching, worship, community living, and personal reflection.
  •  Students focus on foundational Christian topics, such as the nature of God, hearing God’s voice, the Holy Spirit, and their own identity in Christ.

Outreach Phase

Make Him known.

  • The second phase is the practical application of the lecture phase teachings.
  •  Students travel to cross-cultural settings, both nationally and internationally, to share their faith through various ministries and service work.

Special kinds of DTS

Many DTSes offer a special focus on a specific interest. The “Crossroads” or “All Ages” DTS meets the needs of students over 30, such as second-career people or families with children. Read about how to choose a DTS.
